After the shock of that pronouncement faded, I pressed Janet harder. The two women were each other’s literary heirs and would control the books and whatever came. I still found it hard to believe. “You can’t even talk to each other without getting into a hair-pulling fight but you entrusted her with what happens to your work?”

“I know it sounds crazy, but no one loves her books more than I do. And she loves mine. It’s part of the competition. We both recognize the other’s talent. I would honor Sandra’s literary heritage, as she would mine. And we both left very clear instructions on what is to happen. I have her key, and she has a key to my house. The only thing I worry about, should I die unexpectedly, is the cats. Sandra isn’t a great lover of felines, but Daryl adores them. That’s why I was so startled to learn he bought a house in Pass Christian. Daryl was supposed to inherit my house and my cats. He knew I’d be joining my parents in Costa Rica in the next few years and the house would be his. That was part of our deal.”

The relationship between the two women and Daryl was very complicated. A team of psychologists could work on sorting it out for the next fifty years.

“Do you have another key to Sandra’s we can use, in case we can’t find Harold this morning? We probably will, but just in case.” I tried not to worry her about Harold, but I wanted to see her reaction.

“You don’t have a clue where he could be?”

“He was at the inn, but I thought he might come back to visit more with you.” I put it out there.

“No, he saw me home like such a gentleman, but then he drove on to the inn.” She bit a corner of her bottom lip. “It was late. Where would he go?”

She seemed worried, but I didn’t trust her as far as I could throw her, an image that gave me a tad of satisfaction. “Maybe he’s at the mansion.” His car in the parking lot of the Gulfport marina told another story, but she didn’t have to know that. “If you have that key…”

“I do.” She got up and went to a small secretary in the room and found another set of keys. “Front door, back door, garage, and two others for who knows what. Also, keys to Sandra’s car and Daryl’s. Although Sandra usually left a key in her ignition.”

“Daryl had a car?” This was news.

“Yes, a black BMW something or other. Men and their cars. Sandra has a car fetish, too, now that I think about it, but at least her car has some style.”

“And it is?”

“T-Bird. Red, white interior, convertible.” She frowned. “I haven’t seen it at her house, now that I think about it.”

“Garage?” I asked.

“Check when you go.”

She could bet that I would. “Surely Thibodeau knows about this?” I asked.

“Everyone in town knows about it. Sandra would take up two parking spaces to keep her car from getting dinged.
